Paul was born in Liverpool, the son of publicans, Bill and Peggy. A grammar school boy who aged 18 travelled south! After a time as a Warwickshire police officer, he trained in London to be a Primary school teacher. After gaining experience in several schools, he took up his first headship at Silcoates School, Wakefield. Whilst there he gained a masters degree from Leeds University, in primary education. Arriving in Hull in September 1995, he became the Headmaster of Hymers College, Junior School. In 1996 he led his first school battlefield tour of the D-Day beaches. Thirty-one tours later he has led pupils, parents, private tours and the Hell Normandy Veterans themselves. He was made an Associate Member of the Hull Normandy Veterans and wears the badge with great pride. He is also the Acklams Battlefields Guide. His specialism is the rise of Nazism and its eventual destruction, from the D-Day Landings to the Nuremberg Trial. In 2024 Paul visited the Nuremberg Court Room itself and will revisit in 2026. Paul is married to Clare, they have two sons, Joseph and David and two Granddaughters. His hobbies, apart from studying World War II and the resulting European travels, Liverpool Football Club, Hull Kingston Rovers and his lovely racehorse, Sugarpiehoneybunch. Finally, Paul as well as being a leading authority on World War II is also a well-known ‘comic’ after dinner speaker.

On Christmas Eve 2024, Syd Howey, a founding trustee of OSPREY, died.
Syd held several roles within OSPREY and had been for the last 25 years, our Treasurer.
Syd was a highly respected, brilliant nuclear physicist, working over 40 years for the NHS Trust in East Yorkshire. However, his skills and innovation had far reaching effects both nationally and internationally.
He was married to Kath for 62 years and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a great friend to many.
The retiring collection, for OSPREY, at Syd’s funeral raised and incredible £962.00, and the attached photographs are of the handover of the cheque by Syd’s widow and her daughter Lynne.
We have been privileged to have known Syd. He will be greatly missed by us all.
